In the shop manual the extractor lever is in a slotted lug but on this gun it is (or seems to be) permanently enclosed in the lug- Brake cleaner dried clean- I think I need some sort of solvent like that.Īnd.I have some snap caps. On the extractors- this must be a very early model. On old screws with shallow slots.is there a tool to deepen those slots IN PLACE so you can more easily remove them? Next I need to drift out the pins and I have a very basic shop manual on that. If I cock the hammer the rod is back beyond the plate- I think if I put in a jam and then lower the hammer- that will keep the spring depressed and help in removing it. I think some penetrating oils dissolve rust but that may simultaneously remove the 110 year old patina on the outside of the action. The screw to hold in the locking bolt spring goes all the way through the bottom of the frame and that's a lot of contact. Perhaps a load with old wads versus modern shotcups and wads and a reduced powder charge would work ok but first I have to get the spring in and see how it locks up. I think I'll tag it in case others look at it and state modern shells are a go no. What to do? I could put in a liner but that destroys the heirloom aspect. Near the breech I could probably sand out some pits but not all. I tried to clean up a really dirty bore and it is badly pitted. I've taken apart Fox/Stevens/Savage side by sides so I've dabbled in this work before but the Iver Johnson is a different mechanism. If there is still play I was wondering if a paper thin metal shim epoxied or soldered to the area to remove play would be advisable. I'm not sure how things will be after the new spring. Right now, without the lever spring, the action is a little loose after locking up. Is there a way to compress the spring to put it back in after the parts are disassembled? On the action frame, the pins for the trigger and hammer, can you drift out the pins in either direction or are the pins supposed to be driven out from a particular side? The only reason I'd want to disassembly the under lug area is to give everything a good cleaning but I'm wondering if there is a brake cleaner or some type of solvent where I could just soak the under lug area rather than mess around with removing parts. There is no latch plate either- it's not missing because there is no mortise or inlet- it must be an early model. on the under lug requires drifting out pins and on this gun some aren't visible- there is just a pin on one side. I was wrong on the hammer freeze, I pulled extra hard and it cocks ok, I think there is gummed up oils which leads to another question. I suspect the original probably snapped in two and the stub was just pulled out. According to what I can find you need to drift out the pins and remove the hammer and trigger and take off the butt plate so you can remove the hammer spring, then you can get into putting in a new spring. I got a schematic diagram and the lever spring is gone.
